If you’ve been following us for a while you know that we can’t resist weekend trips up to wine country. It’s the perfect day trip and provides a much needed getaway from busy city life. During Memorial Day weekend we decided to see a slightly different side of wine country though and hit up the Sonoma Marin Cheese Trail!! We opted for the Marin side of the cheese trail and stopped at three spots throughout the North Bay.
Marin French Cheese Company
The first stop of the day was at the Marin French Cheese Company in Novato. There was no set tasting so if you wanted to try something you had to fight your way through a fairly busy store and ask someone for a sample. Instead of braving the line we decided to just purchase a couple cheeses that looked good and went outside to find a spot on the lawn around their pond. It’s a great place for a picnic and I could have easily stayed here all day but alas there were more cheeses to be tasted so we headed over to the second spot.
Our second stop of the day was at Nicasio Valley. Very different location compared to our first stop and much more of a farm feel. There is essentially a small tasting room where you can help yourself to samples of each of their cheeses while viewing their cheese making facilities. While not as flashy as the first stop, the cheese was wonderful! It was actually the only place where I purchased cheese to bring home with me. Their award winning Foggy Morning cheese is not to be missed!
Our final stop of the day is a can’t miss spot in Point Reyes! Most Bay Area readers will be familiar with their Ferry Building location and the one in Point Reyes is equally as tasty with the added benefit of having the cheese making facilities on location. At this point in the day we were HUNGRY and decided to take advantage of the extended menu and order up some side salads with our cheese…and a bottle or 2 of wine to wash it all down! Overall a really fun way to spend a weekend day and get out of the city for a bit!
