Fabletics vs Lululemon: Splurge or Save on Activewear?

Updated on

With the start of a New Year, many people make New Year’s resolutions. I know I’ve made my fair share throughout my life… One of the most common resolutions to make is to start working out more. Is this your resolution for 2023?

I’m sure you already know this, but to be successful with a goal or resolution, you need to be prepared, motivated and have a plan to carry it out. A great way to keep the motivation up, and to be prepared to kill your fitness New Year resolution is to get cute workout clothes that you LOVE to wear!

Today we’ll compare two very well-known workout wear brands: Lululemon vs Fabletics. The main difference between Fabletics and Lululemon is the price. One’s a splurge, and one’s a save. Let’s see which one is right for you.

How Do They Work

One is a subscription service, and the other is not.

Fabletics

Fabletics is a fitness brand that provides high quality workout clothing at an affordable price through their monthly VIP membership subscription. They have options for both men and women.

You don’t technically need to be a VIP member to shop the Fabletics site, but you won’t get the steep discounts on workout clothing if you’re not. Becoming a member is easy. You’ll do so through the Fabletics website. Some other perks to being a VIP member of the Fabletics community is that you also get access to Fabletics FIT app, and you’ll be the first to know about new drops or celebrity collaborations.

Once you become a Fabletics VIP member, you’ll be automatically charged $59.95 every month for the subscription. You’ll then get a “credit” that you can use toward any curated outfit or piece of clothing up to $100. That’s a great deal! If you don’t see anything you want, you can let your credits roll over to the next month, but they must be used within a year before they expire! You can also use your credits at Fabletics sister company Yitty which focuses on shapewear.

You do have the option to skip a month, but need to do so between the 1-5 of every month. If you forget, you’ll be automatically charged and given credits for the month. Canceling your membership subscription is also simple and can be done in your account. Just remember to do it before the 5th!

Lululemon

Lululemon is a household name in the workout clothing world. Their claim to popularity came because of the quality of their buttery soft leggings and other workout apparel. Influencers everywhere still recommend and rave about Lululemon. They are very pricey though! Is it worth it to splurge?

Lululemon is NOT a subscription box, but rather a retail store. They do offer two memberships, however: Lululemon essential, and Lululemon Studio.

Their Lululemon essential membership is free to join and gives you early access when a new product drops, free hemming, and exchanges or credits of sale items. The Lululemon Studio membership is $39 per month, but you can only get this membership if you have a Lululemon Studio Mirror.

Neither of these memberships really compare to Fabletics monthly subscription on their workout clothing, so we’re looking mostly at the price and quality of Lululemon’s activewear in this article.

Pros/Cons

There are more pros than cons for Fabletics than there are for Lululemon.

Fabletics

PROS

CONS

Options for both men and women

Can only skip/cancel between the 1st-5th of each month. Don’t forget!

Credits roll over and can be used at sister store, Yitty.

Styles can sell out quickly in certain sizes.

Save money on quality workout clothing.

Sizing from XXS up to 4X.

Trendy items and patterns. Lots of selection to choose from depending on activity.

Free shipping on orders over $49.95, and free exchanges and returns if done within 90 days.

Fabletics has more pros than cons in my book for a couple of reasons: they’re more size inclusive, the quality is there without the high price tag, and they have options for all kinds of sports and fitness activities.

Lululemon

PROS

CONS

Amazing quality of clothing that compliments many body types.

Very pricey compared to other quality fitness apparel brands.

Buttery soft leggings.

Not very size inclusive.

Options for both men and women.

Do not have very specific apparel for activity type (tennis, weightlifting, etc)

Lululemon, although an amazing brand with quality pieces of workout wear, did not have more pros than cons. I think what it comes down to is if you’re willing to splurge to get you Lulu leggings vs save and get more workout outfits to keep you motivated to achieving your New Year fitness resolution.

How Much Do They Cost

Fabletics is your “save” option, and Lululemon is your “splurge.”

Fabletics

To become a VIP member with Fabletics, you’ll pay a monthly subscription of $59.95. This subscription renews automatically. With this subscription you’ll get a credit to use on their website. Each credit can be redeemed for a fully curated outfit, or one item worth up to $100.

If you’d like to skip a month, you can easily do so between the 1st and the 5th of every month. You can also easily cancel your subscription through your online account.

You also don’t even need to be a VIP member to shop from Fabletics, but if you aren’t a member, you won’t get the steep discounts and will have to pay full price for the items.

Lululemon

Lululemon does not have a subscription service or membership for their workout clothing. (free membership?) The average price of a pair of leggings from Lululemon is $95.

They claim that the prices for their apparel is higher because of the technology used to make their workout wear, as well as all the research and quality fibers that they use to make a buttery smooth and durable investment piece in your workout wardrobe.

What can you get with a subscription?

Lululemon is not a subscription company, but Fabletics runs their subscription a different way than most, allowing you to decide what you want to receive each month.

Fabletics

What you get depends on what you choose! Fabletics has options for both men and women. They also have a sister shapewear line, Yitty, that you can use your monthly credits toward.

They also offer so many different options depending on the type of workout wear you need, to different patterns colors and styles. For someone who likes plain workout clothing, I really appreciate that they have these options for me. They also have options in accessories such as bags, shoes, and outerwear. You’ll have to check it out!

Sizing for all items is very size inclusive, ranging from XXS to 4X.

Lululemon

Lululemon is not a subscription box. Anything that you get from Lululemon is because you purchased it directly from their website or in store.

Final Thoughts

If you want to kill your New Year’s resolution to workout more often, then you’re going to want to make sure that you have workout clothing that you’re excited to wear. Two great companies to get quality workout clothing from are: Fabletics and Lululemon.

After comparing these two companies, and the quality of their leggings vs the price, we like FABLETICS better. Here’s why.

Fabletics is more affordable, so if you’re in need of quite a bit of activewear, or you want to get something in the mail monthly to keep you excited about your fitness goal, this is your best bet. Their workout clothing is quality, and they have more options to choose from in patterns/colors but also activity type (weightlifting vs cardio, etc). They are also more size inclusive than Lululemon, and they have options for both men and women.

We hope this comparison article helped you decide whether splurging or saving is the right choice for you. Good luck on your New Year’s resolutions!
