I often find myself wondering what makes the beauty industry go-round. Growing up going to catholic schools and having a conservative family, I wasn’t allowed to wear a lot of makeup. Although, I used to stuff eyeshadow and lipstick in my backpack to put on when I got to school in the mornings (sorry dad).
Think Amanda Bynes, The Girls Room from the early 2000’s show The Amanda Show.
My girlfriends and I used to meet in the girl’s locker room every morning before school and help each other put on makeup. So, as an adult with that middle school locker room in hindsight, I always ask myself “what is so fascinating about makeup?”
Subscription boxes have recently answered my question. People love surprises and while “snail mail” seems to be a thing of the past, everyone loves seeing a package delivered to their door. Not only that, but makeup is FUN and it is another way that individuals can express themselves. From our clothes, tattoos and even the cars we drive— everyone is always looking for a way to show the world who they are.

Glossy Box, a beauty box you receive each month contains five items for only $21 a month. This month I received five items including dry shampoo, a detangling brush, face serum, and more! My favorite product in this month’s box was the detangling brush, as I have been too lazy to go out and buy my own! Glossybox is one of the boxes at the top of my list each month and is definitely worth $21.
What We Like About Glossy Box
Glossy Box is one of the only subscription beauty boxes that I have received that include hair products. Although I LOVE makeup, I am always trying to find the best ways to keep my hair clean and healthy. This month I received both a dry shampoo and a detangling brush. The dry shampoo has become one of my new favorite products for my hair and I intend to buy a full-size version when the min size runs out! If you like variety in your boxes, Glossy Box is a great choice.
What We Don’t Like About GlossyBox
After receiving a different box this month with full-size products I was disappointed to see my products were all travel size. Although, the smaller products come in handy, I wish more of the items in my box would have been larger. Two of the products were full-size, but given the larger products were the brush and the lip balm it didn’t make much of a difference to me.
What’s New With Glossy Box?
In July of 2020, Glossy box came out with their very own skincare line— the first of any subscription box to do so. The line includes 10 different products ranging from moisturizers and cleansers to exfoliators and eye creams. The best part? Their products are vegan and cruelty-free, were made with at least 87% natural ingredients, and most of the packaging was made of 100% recyclable sugarcane. Not only that, but Glossy box claimed to have used 100% renewable electricity and created zero landfill waste. How awesome is that?

GlossyBox Skincare— Eye Boost Cream
Something I grew up knowing is that nearly every woman in my family suffers from having dark circles. My mom always had an eye cream under her vanity and my cousin, who is like my sister, told me from a young age that the only thing I would have to worry about when I was older, in terms of skincare, is making sure I took care of my under eyes.
The Eye Boost Cream is made to brighten your under eye and decrease the look of dark circles. I am VERY particular when it comes to skincare, especially in terms of sensitive areas like the under eye. GlossyBox has created products with no bs ingredients, such as elderflower and seaweed extract, so when I went to try it around my eyes I wasn’t afraid of the aftermath. Although it’s too early to tell if it is lessening my dark circles, my under eye definitely seems moisturized and more likely to hold my makeup!
Rebels Refinery Geo Heart Shaped Lip Balm in Coconut Lime
Truth be told, I never go out looking for lip balms. I have very sensitive skin in general but have found myself to be allergic to a lot of lip balms and chapsticks. When the eos trend of the 2000s occurred, I was bummed to find out (the hard way ) that I could not wear their products like everyone else.
I am extra weary when it comes to lip products as I generally have some sort of allergic reaction. However, when duty calls to try new products, you try new products. To my surprise, Rebels Refinery Geo Heart Shape Lip Balm had no negative effects on my lips. The balm is filled with coconut and almond oils, as well as Vitamin E, to help soften and moisturize your lips. The coconut lime scent and heart shape are an added bonus!

Jecca Blac Glow Drops Primer- Rose Pearl
When I hear “glow” in skincare I usually run for the hills. As someone who has fair skin, I tend to stay away from highlighters, because if not done correctly it seems to look cakey and very harsh on the skin. Upon taking a closer look at the product, I was happy to see that it was both vegan and cruelty free.
The primer has a rose-like tint with a slight shine to it. For me personally, this was not my favorite product. I generally use a moisturizer prior to adding my concealer and foundation (beauty gurus, don’t come for me). With that being said, the Glow Drops Primer made me feel like I was wearing far too much makeup and didn’t do much for me. However, if you love shine and you love primer, you should definitely give Jecca Blac’s a try.
Freeman Beauty Psssst!- Deep Clean Dry Shampoo
I am always, and I mean ALWAYS on the hunt for a new dry shampoo, especially an inexpensive one. I have spent years trying to find the perfect dry shampoo. Spending anywhere from $5 to $35 on a bottle, I have finally come to the conclusion that more expensive does not always mean better. I have tried every drug store brand you can think of and have finally found my front runner.
The search is finally over!
As a longtime lover of Freeman Beauty’s face masks, I knew I had to try their dry shampoo, so when I saw it in my box this month, it was the first item I grabbed. The pink clay and peppermint scent is light and fresh, and the ingredients don’t leave your hair looking greasy or white. As someone who has psoriasis, but also has thin hair, I always had trouble with my dry shampoo making my head itch. Freeman Beauty has cracked the code, because I have no issues with this dry shampoo! If you are a person on the go that loves keeping your hair looking fresh, move this product to the top of your list.
Tangle Teezer The Original Detangling Hair Brush
I grew up in rural Indiana on well water. For you city people who don’t know what that is, basically it is the worst thing that can possibly happen to your skin and your hair.
Let me give you a visual…
Have you ever seen the part of Princess Diaries where Paolo breaks his brush ripping through Mia’s hair? Ya? That’s me every day! Well water can cause color fading and dryness, as well as mineral buildup on your hair overtime. This can lead to issues with frizziness and trouble brushing through your hair. When I say finding a brush that won’t rip my hair out, I’m not kidding.
The Tangle Teezer Original Detangling Brush is the first brush I have found in decades that will brush through my wet hair with ease. I generally have to spend at least 20 minutes brushing through my hair in sections to make sure I don’t cause more damage. This brush has changed my hair and I will never go back to a normal, drugstore brush. If you have a child with a sensitive scalp or you have troubled hair, order this immediately.
Snowberry Youth Renewing Face Serum
As a 20 something-year-old, I don’t spend a lot of time on anything “youth renewing.” Most beauty bloggers would cringe at my skincare routine. I use a face wash to remove my makeup and moisturizer each day, but that is about it.
In my opinion, that is a step up from using a bar of soap to wash my face each night and never putting moisturizer anywhere on my body. I was always taught that less is more. But, as I have aged and have started to see changes in my freckly skin, I’ve realized upping my skincare routine is a must. The youth renewing face serum is perfect for someone who spends a lot of time in the sun. It is said to help plump your skin and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. The ingredients, especially the honey extract made my skin feel extra soft and moisturized after a long summer in the sun.
Final Thoughts
Glossy Box really surprised me with how much I liked the products they sent. Two of the five items, the dry shampoo and detangling brush, are items I will use forever. If you want a box with variety and great new products, Glossy Box is a great addition to your monthly surprises!
